Dallas Schools

Where Dallas families go to school.

Whether you're relocating from across the country or moving across town, understanding school zones in Dallas is key. Here's a breakdown of the public districts, charter options, and private schools North Dallas families consider when house hunting.

01 · Public Districts

RISD, PISD, and DISD.

Three public districts cover most of where Anita's clients are buying. Each has its own personality — here's the honest take on what to expect from each.

RISD

Richardson ISD

Covers: Richardson, Lake Highlands, and parts of North Dallas (Spring Creek, Canyon Creek, Brentfield, Northwood Hills, and more)

What's Great

  • Top-rated elementary schools: Bowie, Brentfield, Prairie Creek, Mohawk, Spring Creek, ACM, and many more
  • Neighborhood schools + walkability
  • Active parent involvement and magnet options
  • Solid balance of academics and community
  • Magnet school options via lottery application
  • Open enrollment — can apply if not living in RISD boundaries
  • Pre-K 3 and Pre-K 4 options

PISD

Plano ISD

Covers: Plano, Far North Dallas, and additional parts of the northeast suburbs

What's Great

  • Highly ranked public district with IB & AP programs
  • Strong GT (gifted & talented) programs and high college acceptance rates
  • West Plano schools have national rankings
  • Pre-K options available
  • I went to school here personally — I know it well

DISD

Dallas ISD

Covers: All of Dallas not zoned to other ISDs (like Richardson, Garland, etc.)

What's Great

  • Strong academic magnets (Dealy, TAG, Booker T. Washington, Townview)
  • Unique specialty programs

Things to Note

  • Quality varies heavily by zone
  • Many Dallas families opt for private or charter alternatives

02 · Tuition-Free

Public charter schools.

Charter schools are tuition-free public schools that operate independently of the ISD they're in. Most use lottery enrollment — apply early. These are the notable local options serving Plano and Far North Dallas.

PTAA — Pioneer Technology & Arts Academy

Trivium Charter School

Basis Charter

International Leadership of Texas (K–8 in Garland)

Uplift North Hills (K–12)

Harmony Science Academy (Plano + North Dallas)

Great Hearts Irving & Great Hearts Forest Heights

Founders Classical Academy — Frisco

Tip

Apply early (November–February) and check each school's lottery deadline. For a comprehensive list, search Texas charter schools on Niche.com.

03 · Private K–12

Notable private schools.

North Dallas and the northern suburbs offer many respected private schools with diverse programs, religious affiliations, and strong academics. The most competitive — by Niche.com rankings — are St. Mark's, Hockaday, and Greenhill.

Tuition Range

$27,000 – $40,000 annually for most K–12 private schools.

Application Timing

Like applying to college. Best chance of admission is at Pre-K. Info sessions start in October the year before. Sibling priority and alumni ties matter at most schools.

Insider Note

Start prepping in August–November for the following school year and mark your calendar for open house and info session dates the moment they're posted.

Pro Tip

Schools and resale value.

Although we can never predict the future, homes zoned to highly sought-after schools — like Brentfield Elementary or Bowie Elementary in RISD — tend to hold strong resale demand even when the broader market softens. School zoning is one of the few buying decisions that compounds over time.

Schools-First Home Search

Looking for a specific school feed?

If you have a target school in mind — Brentfield, Bowie, Hockaday, St. Mark's — Anita can build your home search around that zoning specifically. Most families find their dream home by starting with the school, not the address.
